Three days of rain-triggered mudslides have killed 58 Brazilians and left more than 3,500 homeless in the northeastern city of Salvador, rescue officials said, as hillside after hillside gave way under the torrents of water. Heavy rain and high winds knocked out power lines and blackened outlying districts in the city of 1.8 million, located about 1,000 miles northeast of Rio de Janeiro. Sewage systems and water networks were destroyed in some areas, Civil Defense spokeswoman Emilia Vasconcelos said. People are being sheltered in schools, churches and a soccer stadium, she said.
