From Times wire services

Defense Secretary Dick Cheney promised visiting Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin today to try to keep U.S. military aid to Israel at $1.8 billion next year despite Pentagon budget cuts.

“Mr. Rabin expressed an interest in seeing that the United States maintain its military commitment to Israel,” a U.S. defense official said after Rabin and Cheney met for more than an hour at the Defense Department, and Cheney “said he would do his best.”

The Bush Administration has asked Congress to keep total U.S. aid to Israel at its current level in fiscal 1990, beginning in October--$1.8 billion in military assistance and $1.2 billion in economic support.
