James W. Johnston, an executive with Citibank, has been appointed chairman and chief executive of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco USA, effective June 1. Before joining Citibank in 1984, Johnston, 43, was executive vice president-U.S. sales, marketing and product development for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. RJR Nabisco Inc. is the Atlanta-based parent company of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco USA. Johnson succeeds Chief Executive Ralph Angiuoli, who is retiring.
