Schindler Group of Switzerland, which bought Westinghouse Electric Corp.’s elevator and escalator operations in January, is merging the Westinghouse businesses into its own and will close plants in Toledo, Ohio, and Randolph, N.J., the company announced today.

Schindler also said it intends to build a new 100,000-square-foot escalator plant in Clinton, N.C. Construction will begin in August, with a target of the second quarter of 1990 for the beginning of escalator production.

David Bauhs, president of Westinghouse Elevator Co. before its acquisition by Schindler, will head Schindler Corp., a new wholly owned subsidiary headquartered in Morristown, the company said.
