The trimaran Great American, crippled when its head-stay snapped last week in its bid to set a record for sailing from New York to San Francisco around Cape Horn, was sailing smoothly under jury rigging 350 miles southwest of Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon. The craft was expected to finish Thursday, about five days ahead of the record of 80 days 20 hours set by the monohull Thursday’s Child earlier this year.
