From Times wire services

A wooden cross was set ablaze outside a new high school for the children of Japanese business executives, and police said today they are considering stepping up patrols around the campus.

The crude, 6 1/2-foot cross was wrapped in paper and plastic, propped against a stone gate and torched Tuesday night, Police Chief Mike Jenkins said. No one has been arrested.

“What we feel it is right now is a prank,” Jenkins said. He said he knows of no threats against the Tennessee Meiji Gakuin High School, the first high school for Japanese in the United States that opened two weeks ago with 24 students.
