A man was sentenced to four years in jail and his common-law wife was placed on three years’ probation Thursday for keeping the man’s 8-year-old son in a back yard cage and beating him with a wooden club.

Andrew E. Crosby, 34, of South Los Angeles, was convicted last month of a single felony count of child endangerment. Superior Court Judge Jack Ryburn sentenced him to four years in jail.

His common-law wife, Brigettatha Brown, 31, was placed on three years’ probation after being convicted of one count of misdemeanor child abuse. She had served nearly eight months behind bars awaiting trial.
