Rip-Roaring Price for Remington Bronze
Frederic Remington’s 1902 bronze “Coming Through the Rye,” depicting four cowboys firing pistols into the air at full gallop, was sold at auction Thursday for $4.4 million, a world record price for a piece of American sculpture.
The piece was bought by an anonymous telephone buyer, said Dana Micucci, a spokesman for Christie’s auction house in Manhattan.
The work was part of a group of important American paintings, drawings and sculptures of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
The statue, a first cast, is one of Remington’s most recognized works. The turn-of-the-century sculptor and painter was known for works that captured the spirit of the American West.
Christie’s had estimated that the piece would sell for $2 million to $3 million. The record price includes the auction house’s 10% buyer’s premium.
