Poland’s Roman Catholic primate expressed concern about a dispute over registering a national students’ union and said he hopes it can be settled peacefully. Students on strike in at least 15 colleges in Warsaw and three other cities over a court refusal to legalize their pro-Solidarity union NZS decided to continue the protest. A clause in the NZS charter proclaiming the right to strike prompted a court to refuse its registration. Cardinal Josef Glemp expressed concern for the students but seemed to urge them to drop insistence on the right to strike. “We want the students to get such advisers as would help them formulate their demands in such a way that they get a just and rightful registration of their association,” Glemp said.
