Soviets Show Big Rise in New Congregations

The Soviet Council for Religious Affairs reports that 1,610 new Christian congregations were registered last year, that 937 religious buildings were returned and that 143 permits were issued for building new churches.
The figures, released in Moscow, were much greater than for the year before, when only 104 new congregations were registered, 17 buildings returned and 10 building permits issued.
