Four Soviet officials will start a two-day military inspection in central Italy today--the first of its kind in an area in which no military activities are reported to be under way, the Italian Foreign Ministry said. A statement said the inspection was requested by the Soviet Union under the terms of the 35-nation conference on security and cooperation. It said Moscow’s request is the first to take advantage of provisions agreed to by the 1986 Stockholm disarmament conference allowing inspections in areas in which no known military activities are carried out. Italy last month sent a team to inspect military exercises near the Soviet city of Gorky.
