The World : Police Bar S. Korea Rally
Thousands of riot police blocked a protest rally in Seoul by dissidents calling for the overthrow of President Roh Tae Woo and the expulsion of U.S. troops. More than 500 people were arrested. The government deployed about 7,000 troops in a major show of strength, blanketing the city center and using their shields to block off the park where the rally was to be held. Meanwhile, more than 500 students entered the third day of a hunger strike on the grounds of the capital’s Roman Catholic cathedral. The protesters accuse police of torturing to death student Lee Chul Kyu, a 24-year-old campus newspaper editor whose body was found May 10 in a reservoir in the southern city of Kwangju. Police deny the charges.
