As thousands of Memorial Day revelers poured in to play at the West Coast’s last seaside playground, the famed Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk was designated a state historical landmark. The half-mile-long boardwalk stretching along Santa Cruz Bay, about 60 miles south of San Francisco, was originally modeled after New York’s Coney Island. It has been a favorite of vacationers and graduating high school seniors since 1907. “This is one of the most exciting amusement parks in the world and holds much nostalgia for many people who remember spending their youths here,” said Ann Parker, a spokesman for the concern that has operated the facility since 1915.
