Alcatraz Ferry Fleet to Be Sold to Rival Firm
SAN FRANCISCO — The owner of the historic ferry fleet that shuttles tourists to San Francisco Bay’s famed Alcatraz island said Wednesday that it agreed to sell the business to an archrival boating company owned by Pier 39.
Crowley Maritime Corp. said it has agreed to sell the Red & White Fleet to the Blue & Gold Fleet for an undisclosed price.
The Red & White’s ferryboats, a familiar sight on the bay since the 1930s, will be repainted with the colors of the Blue & Gold.
The sale represents a symbolic victory for UC Berkeley over its own rival, Stanford University, across the bay.
The Blue & Gold Fleet, started in 1979, was reportedly named after the school colors at Berkeley.
