San Gabriel : Student’s Bravery Honored
Ruben Ortega of Alhambra, a former San Gabriel High School student, has received the Governor’s 1988 Young American Medal for Bravery Award.
On April 26, 1988, after a San Gabriel High School student armed with an assault rifle entered a classroom and held 70 students hostage, Ortega was able to get close enough to grab the rifle and wrestle the suspect to the floor.
The award program was established in 1950 to honor people 18 or younger who distinguish themselves by acts of bravery or demonstration of outstanding character and service.
