Saying that Long Beach needs to expand its police force by more than the 10 additional officers proposed in next year’s budget, Councilman Warren Harwood is advocating the hiring of 45 new officers and the establishment of a police substation on the east side of Long Beach airport.

Harwood, who intends to present his proposal at a budget hearing Tuesday, says his plan could be paid for with $3.2 million in new revenue from a variety of city fees, including airport and harbor fees.

The city manager’s proposed budget of nearly $1.3 billion includes funding for 10 new officers, but the Long Beach police chief has said he needs another 164 officers.
