South African Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu urged the government to reprieve all prisoners on Death Row, including a white mass murderer. The black Anglican leader called for abolition of the death penalty and an amnesty for the more than 200 prisoners on Death Row. “I include even Barend Strydom, who is a child and product fed on the hatred and contempt that are the logical consequences of apartheid,” said Tutu, referring to the former policeman, 23, who was condemned last week. Strydom, who testified that he considers blacks to be animals, shot and killed seven people and wounded 16 blacks during a shooting spree in downtown Pretoria in November. Tutu also urged a reprieve for 14 blacks sentenced to hang for their part in killing a policeman.
