NATION : Ailing Chinese Sailor Flown Ashore
STANFORD — A Chinese sailor suffering from appendicitis was airlifted from a ship 700 miles off San Francisco and taken to Stanford University Hospital after a dramatic 12-hour rescue by the Air National Guard.
Guo Jil, 19, was listed in stable condition this morning after surgery at Stanford, where he arrived at 11 p.m. Thursday by ambulance from Moffett Field.
The rescue operation began at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday, when a Coast Guard C-130 transport plane from Sacramento dropped three paramedics into the water near the ship, a Coast Guard spokesman said. The team was taken on board at about 2:15 p.m. and stabilized Jil until an Air National Guard helicopter could fly in and make the airlift back to Moffett.
