Los Angeles Teachers’ Strike Settlement
Reflecting on the teachers’ strike, it’s soul gratifying to see pictures of children of all ages and colors happily embracing their teachers upon returning to school (Part I, May 27). With all this togetherness and respect, it makes you sort of wonder why we still nickel and dime the teaching profession.
When is the last time you saw a school kid hugging his lawyer, his doctor, his accountant, or his engineer or viewed the latter on a picket line? While those in these vocations continue to clamber for the fast buck or just bucks in general, the dedicated teachers continue to educate and prepare the young for their future journey into life’s complicated and problem-swollen world. All at literally a fraction of what other professions earn.
Wake up, America, reset your priorities and open your purse.
