Cranky Golfing Fanatics

The story “Rancho Golfers Say Sculpture Out of Bounds” (May 22) should have been titled “Cranky Golfers of San Diego.”

Who does Diane Tietjen think she is, Nancy Lopez? You’d think she was playing for a living on the pro tour. Sheesh!

Mr. and Mrs. Goldberg and artist Fletcher Benton obviously aren’t familiar with the temperament and sensitivities of golfers in San Diego’s affluent “planned” (brain-dead) communities.

Basically, anything that distracts them from their pursuit of a perfect round must be silenced, hidden, painted, pruned or removed. I’m not surprised some Rancho Santa Fe golfers are up in arms over a piece of sculpture.

A number of years ago, a friend with a large family lived on the green of the private course in Rancho Bernardo. The cranky golfers used to walk over to the edge of her lawn and “SHUUSSSH!” her children for making too much noise in their own back yard! Every now and then, just to get even, my friend would hide behind her drapes near an open window and blow a loud, shrill whistle just as a golfer was about to tee up near her yard.

Golf is a great sport. It’s too bad there are so many people who have nothing better to do than make it the focus of their entire lives and expect the rest of the world to hide and hush so as not to interfere with their pursuit of par.
