World-Class Field to Compete Today in Irvine Track Meet

More than 100 world-class track and field athletes will compete today in the Irvine Elite track meet at UC Irvine.

The meet--field events start at 3:30 p.m., running events at 4:30--features more than 30 Olympians, and world-class athletes from New Zealand, Sweden, Canada, Jamaica, Kenya and Cuba.

Some of the top entrants are Roger Kingdom, the two-time defending Olympic gold medalist, who will race U.S. record-holder Renaldo Nehemiah in the 110-meter high hurdles; Evelyn Ashford, a three-time Olympian in the 100-meter dash and gold medalist in that event in 1984; Danny Harris, silver medalist in the 400-meter hurdles in 1984, and two-time Olympian Julius Kariuki of Kenya, the gold medalist in the steeplechase at the Seoul Olympics.

Ana Quirot of Cuba, who last year was ranked third in the world in the 400 meters and 800 meters, is scheduled to compete, along with teammates Roberto Hernandez in the 400 meters and Luiz Deliz in the discus.
