Visit Scotland for Only a Wee Amount of Cash : Scotland at a Wee Price

The canny Scots are offering a few bargains for the summer.

Both Glasgow and Edinburgh will have city travel passes, and a Travelpass covers the Scottish Highlands.

Prices for the Glasgow “Family Day Tripper” start at about $9 U.S. for one adult and up to two children, $16 for two adults and up to four children. They allow you to take as many bus and train trips as you want in a single day.

The pass covers Glasgow and nearby places such as Girvan, Dumbarton Castle, Loch Lomond and Strathclyde Park.

Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, offers a tourist card good for two to 13 days. The cost ranges from about $6 for two days to $20 for 13 days. Use is unlimited. The pass also offers discounts at some shops and sightseeing attractions.

There is also an “Edinburgh Freedom Ticket” that provides unlimited travel on Lothian Region Transport city bus service for one day at about $2.10. A “Rideacard Season Ticket,” providing unlimited bus travel around Edinburgh and the surrounding Lothian area, can be bought for one week for about $8.50.

The Glasgow and Edinburgh passes can be bought only in those cities.

For Wider Travel

If you plan to roam through more of Scotland, consider the Travelpass, which offers unlimited travel on most bus, train and ferry services in the Scottish Highlands and islands. You also get a pass card and handbook offering discounts ranging from 10% to 50% at some restaurants, stores and sightseeing attractions.

A one-week pass, which can be used over an eight-day period, costs $95 between June and September. The two-week pass, with 13 days of travel over a 15-day period, is $125 for the peak season that begins this month.

The Travelpass can be bought in the United States through travel agents or Scots-American Travel Advisors. The latter can be reached by calling toll-free (800) 247-7268.

A Scottish Explorer Ticket, sold in Scotland, provides unrestricted entry to various monuments and historic homes. A seven-day pass costs about $6.80.

The Britrail Pass covers Scotland, and you can get it for 8, 15, 22 or 30 consecutive days. However, a new Flexipass allows travelers to break their rail journeys without the time counting against their passes.
