Olympic sprint champion Carl Lewis will head a team from the Santa Monica Track Club aiming for the 11-year-old world record in the 800-meter relay at a British meet this month.

Promoters of the quadrangular meet set June 23 and 24 among teams from the United States, the Soviet Union, West Germany and Britain said today that Lewis and his Santa Monica teammates will represent the club in the relay at Alexander Stadium.

Joining Lewis, winner of the last two Olympic gold medals in the 100 meters, on the relay squad will be Olympic 200-meter champion Joe DeLoach, Danny Everett and Floyd Heard.

The world record in the 800 relay is 1 minute, 20.26 seconds, set by USC in 1978.

The 800 relay is an invitational event and not on the quadrangular schedule. Lewis is not expected to compete as part of the U.S. team because of a dispute with the Athletics Congress, the governing body for track and field in the United States.
