Three Zimbabweans were convicted by the nation’s High Court of charges of helping South African commandos blow up installations inside Zimbabwe that were used by South Africa’s outlawed African National Congress. Kevin Woods, 35, Michael Smith, 34, and Barry Bawden, 30, were found guilty of terrorism, sabotage and possession of illegal weapons. They face a maximum penalty of death at sentencing this week. Woods and Smith already are on death row--the first two alleged spies for South Africa to face the gallows since independence in 1980. The government of President Robert Mugabe has allowed an African National Congress political presence in the country, with representatives in the capital, and also has allowed the ANC to set up a number of “refugee” safehouses.
