Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot has resigned his last leadership post and pledged not to participate in a future Cambodian government once all Vietnamese troops have left the country, Khmer Rouge radio reported. It said that Pol Pot, 64, has resigned as head of the Khmer Rouge High Institute of National Defense, the last official post he held. The broadcast said he will remain in the institute as a “researcher” until the Vietnamese withdrawal is complete. Hanoi has promised to do that by Sept. 30. The Khmer Rouge is now the dominant military faction in a three-party coalition opposed to the Vietnam-installed Cambodian government led by Heng Samrin.
