STOCKHOLM — The man standing trial for the 1986 assassination of Prime Minister Olof Palme said today he signed condolence books for Palme five times and stole a picture of the politician to express “how much I miss him.”
Christer Pettersson also drew laughter from the maximum security courtroom as attorneys finished their opening cross examination when he tried to prove he was at home at the moment Palme was assassinated by saying he has “an in-built clock.”
Pettersson, who is being tried on circumstantial evidence, does not own a watch, and a close friend had contradicted him on the time he said he arrived home.
Asked by the prosecutor what time it was in the courtroom, Pettersson missed by 29 minutes.
