Angry crowds set fire to a train Tuesday night after it roared into Shanghai’s rail station, killing six student protesters manning a barricade near the tracks. Six other people were injured by the train, which was unable to stop in time.

Shanghai Radio said that the irate crowds set fire to the train engine and that 21 railway security officials were beaten and injured when they tried to put out the blaze.

The flames quickly torched the other cars of the train, and passengers fled for their lives.

Crowds continued to erect street barricades throughout Shanghai today.

There were small funeral marches in the city for the thousands of people killed and wounded when troops stormed Beijing to drive pro-democracy students from Tian An Men Square.

An American student in the port of Tianjin said that the city was disrupted by demonstrations and that foreign students were trying to make their way out.

Large demonstrations were also reported in Nanjing, Harbin and the southern city of Changsha.
