Construction began Wednesday on the Times Mirror Hall of Native American Cultures at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

The two-level, 10,000-square-foot exhibition space, scheduled to open in January, 1991, will focus on the past two centuries and enable the museum to bring out of storage its holdings of Native American artifacts, such as part of an extensive collection of Navajo textiles. One gallery will offer changing exhibits of contemporary Native American art.

Times Mirror Foundation is founder of the hall. Other major funders include Chandis Securities, Mrs. Justin Dart, United States Borax and Chemical Co. and First Interstate Bank Foundation.
