World : Terms Set for End of Rushdie Threat

LONDON — Iran’s leaders set conditions to drop the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s death threat against author Salman Rushdie, British newspapers reported today.
Kalim Siddiqui, the director of London’s Moslem Institute, said Rushdie should withdraw his novel, “The Satanic Verses,” and give proceeds to a fund for victims of religious riots in India and Pakistan, according to reports in the Times and the Daily Express.
“Iran has no intention of killing Mr. Rushdie. It will not withdraw the death threat but is prepared to let the matter drop,” Siddiqui was quoted as saying. Siddiqui, who led the British delegation to Khomeini’s funeral, made the remarks after talks with Iranian leaders in Tehran.
