Tomac Top U. S. Finisher in Stage Race

Cyclist John Tomac of Chatsworth was the top U. S. finisher in the 10th stage of the Milk Race on Thursday. Tomac completed the 118-mile stage from Bridlington to Lincoln, England, in 4 hours, 38 minutes, 18 seconds--six seconds behind stage winner Miroslav Klaus of Czechoslovakia.

Tomac was unable to gain on Gary Mulder, the leading U. S. cyclist, who finished 28th, also in 4:38:18.

Tomac is in 22nd place overall, two minutes, 13 seconds behind race leader Keith Reynolds of Britain in the 1,150-mile event. The race continues today with a 123-mile stage from Lincoln to Leicester.

Greg Weaver, who led Chatsworth High to a City Section volleyball championship, has been selected 4-A Division Player of the Year. Weaver, a senior outside hitter, started for three season and has signed to play next season at Cal State Northridge. He also is one of 48 players selected for next month’s U. S. Olympic Festival.

Other first-team 4-A selections include Jeremy Graham and Jamie Chen of Chatsworth and Gary Reznick of Taft. Second-team selection include Scott Mehlman and David Saranow of Taft and Mike Millet of Chatsworth. El Camino Real’s Andy Conly and Sam Goldman of Granada Hills were named to the third team.

Jennifer Kuhn of Sepulveda won the Class III all-around gymnastics title at the state championships at Westlake High last Sunday. Kuhn, 10, placed first on the vault, balance beam and floor exercises and second on the uneven bars for a 35.15-point total.
