Passes for Iceland Tours
If Iceland is in your travel plans, several air and bus passes in that island country are worth checking out.
Icelandair offers an Icelandair Air Pass priced at $165 U.S. that permits a choice of four flights within the country. The pass, good for 30 days from the first flight, has to be bought in the United States in conjunction with an international ticket to Iceland, but you can fly to the country on any carrier.
Another choice is an Air Rover ticket for $210, which provides flights from Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital, to Isafjordur, Egilsstadir, Akureyri, Hofn and back to Reykjavik. Or you can take this directional pass, good for 30 days starting with the first flight, in reverse order. The pass can be bought in the United States or Iceland.
Air-Bus Combinations
Air-bus pass combinations are also available. The Air-Bus Rover, offered by the carrier, allows you to take one flight from Reykjavik to any point the airline serves in Iceland, with a return to the capital by bus.
The special tickets cost from $82 to $166, depending on the destination. Good for 30 days, this pass can also be bought either in the United States or Iceland.
If you want to travel entirely by bus, the Omnibus Passport allows unlimited travel on scheduled bus routes. A one-week pass costs $190; two weeks, $240; three weeks, $310, and four weeks, $350.
Another possibility is a Full Circle Passport for $165, which follows the Ring Route. This route goes around the coast of Iceland and to some of the most visited and scenic areas.
You can get off and spend some time at a destination and then catch the next bus. The pass, available in the United States or Iceland, is good for a year.
You Can Rough It, Too
If you’re willing to bypass some standard hotel amenities you can buy a minimum of seven Sleep As You Please vouchers for $107. The vouchers provide sleeping-bag accommodations at 29 summer hotels, dormitories or farmhouses, all without private bath.
Icelandair flies to Iceland and Europe out of New York and Orlando, Fla.
If you fly round trip on the airline to Luxembourg with a companion, you can get a Kemwel rental car free for a week, including unlimited mileage and the value-added tax of 12%. The car must be picked up and returned to the Kemwel station in Luxembourg.
Bookings for the car rental must be made at least seven days in advance of departure. Single travelers have to pay a supplemental fee of $30 for the car.
