Iran’s Parliament Speaker Hashemi Rafsanjani, whose political position has strengthened since the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s death, was reelected to another one-year term, the official news agency IRNA said. It reported that 230 out of 241 deputies at special session of the Iranian Parliament voted to retain the Speaker. Rafsanjani, 55, who is also the armed forces commander in chief, is the only declared candidate in the Aug. 18 presidential election.
