U.S. Beats Mexico, Reaches Medal Round
Billy Owens scored six consecutive points late in the fourth quarter Monday night to lead the United States to a 96-86 victory over Mexico, advancing the Americans into the medal round of the World Championship of Basketball qualifying tournament.
Owens, from Syracuse University, came off the bench with the United States leading, 88-86, and made three baskets as the Americans scored the last eight points.
Christian Laettner of Duke scored 20 points for the Americans (4-1). Lionel Simmons of La Salle added 15 and Owens had 13. Julio Gallardo scored 21 points for Mexico (1-4).
