Los Angeles Harbor College will hold it 40th annual commencement exercises at 6 p.m. today. Two-year associate degrees will be awarded to 500 students on the lawn area west of the administration building at the college, 1111 Figueroa Place, Wilmington.

Featured speakers will be two graduating students, John A. Chavez of Torrance and Dana Shanks of Lawndale.

James Heinselman, acting vice chancellor for educational research and development, will present the Chancellor’s Distinguished Honor Award to graduates who have earned at least a 3.7 grade-point average.

Amicus Collegii (Friend of the College) awards will be presented to an outstanding Harbor College alumnus and an outstanding community leader.

A reception for the graduates will be held in the cafeteria on the campus immediately after the commencement ceremonies.

Other Graduations:

Los Angeles Southwest College will hold its 22nd annual commencement exercises at 11 a.m. today. About 350 students will receive two-year associate degrees or one-year certificates during the ceremonies in the campus plaza at the school, 1600 W. Imperial Highway.

Phyllis Tucker-Vinson, vice president for children’s and family programs of NBC’s entertainment division, will be the featured speaker. A former Los Angeles Southwest College student, she became the first black woman in network television to be named as programming vice president when she was appointed to her post in 1981.

A reception for the graduates and their guests will be held in the Little Theater foyer immediately following the commencement ceremonies.

El Camino College will hold its 42nd annual commencement exercises at 4 p.m. Friday in Murdock Stadium on campus. Nearly 1,200 students will graduate.

Explorer-adventurer John Goddard of La Canada will deliver the keynote address.

Of the 1,200 El Camino graduates, 575 will receive El Camino’s first associate in science degrees. The remainder will receive the traditional associate in arts degree. Six graduates receiving AA degrees have completed the honors program.
