NATION : Rep. Coelho Bids House Farewell
WASHINGTON — Rep. Tony Coelho (D-Merced), acknowledging “winds of change,” bade a sad farewell to the House today, leaving under the cloud of an investigation after nearly 25 years of service.
“Today, a wonderful chapter in the lives of the Coelho family is closing,” the former assistant Democratic leader said in a brief speech shortly after the House convened.
“The joy we find in leaving is the opportunity our new lives promise for being together. The sadness is in departing this House of Representatives--a place I truly love.”
Coelho resigned from the House to avoid a prolonged ethics investigation of his investment in a $100,000 “junk bond” issued by Drexel Burnham Lambert Inc.
