Senior Housing Project OKd
The Hawthorne City Council on Thursday voted 3 to 0 to approve plans for a 75-unit senior housing project at Felton Avenue and 119th Street.
The council on Monday had split 2-2 on the project, proposed by a nonprofit organization, The East Los Angeles Community Union.
Councilman Charles Bookhammer and Councilwoman Ginny M. Lambert voted in favor; Councilmen Steven Andersen and David M. York voted against it after raising questions about the suitability of the proposed site, near the intersection of the I-105 and I-405 freeways.
Mayor Betty J. Ainsworth, an advocate of senior housing, was in Sacramento on city business Monday and missed the vote. She called a special meeting of the council at noon Thursday, and voted for the project along with Lambert and Bookhammer.
The council’s approval permitted the nonprofit group to submit the proposal to federal officials to meet a 4 p.m. Thursday deadline.
The opportunity for funding would have been lost if the agency failed to get approval from a majority of council members Thursday, according to city officials.
