The World : Marcos Has More Surgery
Former Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos underwent emergency surgery to correct a bleeding gastric ulcer, a spokesman at Honolulu’s St. Francis Medical Center said. Marcos, 71, already suffering from kidney, lung and heart failure, was said to be conscious but not fully alert after the 90-minute procedure. “Mr. Marcos’ condition is very serious,” said spokesman Eugene Tiwanak. “Given the current condition of Mr. Marcos and his kidneys, whenever you have something additional to that it really worsens his prognosis.” The deposed president’s wife, Imelda, went to the hospital after the operation to visit him in the intensive care unit. Marcos has been hospitalized since January and has been on life-support equipment since last month.
