For the third time in 22 years, Newsweek magazine has placed its weekly rival, Time, on its own cover.

And Newsweek is bragging about it. The magazine took out a full-page ad in today’s New York Times featuring this week’s cover: a picture of a mock Time cover with the headline, “The Battle Over Time Inc.”

The reference is to Time’s struggle to merge with Warner Communications Inc. and fend off the advances of Paramount Communications Inc.

The first occasion that Time appeared on Newsweek’s cover was in 1967 when Time co-founder Henry Luce died. In 1985, Time appeared on Newsweek’s cover for a story on Ariel Sharon’s libel suit against Time.
