Mental Health Clinic Closures
After reading the article about the agony and suffering that is being caused by the closure of many of the county mental health clinics, I have feelings of shame and frustration (“Mental Health Clinic Closures Create Turmoil,” Part I, June 10).
Shame that I am living so well while these unfortunate people are being denied the help that they have come to depend on, and frustration that there is so little that I can do about it.
I am doing the obvious thing in a situation like this. I am writing letters to the governor and my state representatives pointing out that, in view of the recent windfall in our state financial status, they should be able to fund the shortage in the clinics’ budget.
I, and I’m sure many other compassionate people, would be willing to make a donation to the county mental health clinics but I don’t know how to do that without having the money bleed off into the bureaucracy and not accomplish anything.
President George Bush’s “kinder, gentler America” certainly has not trickled down into our county mental health program!
