The Peruvian army staged a surprise attack on a column of Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) guerrillas in the Amazon jungle, killing 50 of them, a Lima newspaper reported. Two soldiers also died in the gun battle, the newspaper La Republica said. Neither the Defense Ministry nor the Interior Ministry would comment on the report. The newspaper said that the army, using helicopters, surprised the Maoist guerrillas after they had raided the village of Palo de Acero in Huamalies province, about 225 miles northeast of Lima. Also, police said two students were killed by guerrillas in an attack in Ayacucho, 225 miles southeast of Lima.
