National Semiconductor Corp.: The Santa Clara, Calif.-based computer company reported a net loss for fiscal year 1989 of $23.2 million, contrasted with net earnings of $62.7 million in fiscal 1988. The firm reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $77.1 million, up 244%. Sales from continuing operations for fiscal year 1989 were up 14% to $1.6 billion. The company blamed costs associated with “operating redundant facilities (and) . . . decreased production” for its profitability problems.
