P.M. BRIEFING : Netherlands to Ban Ivory Import

AMSTERDAM —
The Netherlands said today that it will ban direct imports of African ivory, joining other European countries campaigning to save the world’s dwindling elephant herds.
The Agriculture Ministry said it has stopped issuing licenses for importing African ivory, effective immediately. African elephants, slaughtered by poachers for their ivory tusks, have dwindled to 625,000 from 1.3 million in 1979.
