Oklahoma University regents today approved the hiring of Gary Gibbs as head football coach and gave Barry Switzer, who resigned Monday, a $225,000 settlement.

Gibbs, who has spent his entire collegiate coaching career as an assistant at the university, was given a salary of $88,000.

The settlement for Switzer included a $145,000 lump payment on June 1, 1990. It also provided that Switzer will be paid a salary of $7,250 a month while on “special assignment” until Feb. 1.

Switzer resigned following six months of turmoil after the school received a three-year NCAA probation and five players were charged in incidents involving guns, drugs and sexual assault. He had four years left on his contract.
