WORLD : France Promises Aid to Vietnam
PARIS — France promised today to help rebuild Vietnam and accept more refugees from its former colony.
French officials said Vietnamese Foreign Minister Nguyen Co Thach, on a three-day visit to France, agreed with his French counterpart, Roland Dumas, on a series of measures to help Vietnam overcome its crippling economic and social problems.
“France will play a pivotal role” in Vietnamese efforts to settle its international debt, a Foreign Ministry spokesman added.
On the humanitarian front, France has agreed to double from 1,200 last year the number of Vietnamese legally seeking refuge in France.
