United Way Funds Classes for Parents

Grants totaling $41,000 have been awarded to eight South-Central Los Angeles agencies for parenting education courses during the next year, the Metropolitan Region of United Way announced this week.

Dr. Novel Stokes, chairman of the education subcommittee of United Way’s South Central Underserved Geographic Areas Project, said the courses are designed to give parents and guardians “more effective parenting skills.”

In announcing the awards, Stokes pointed out that today’s parents face “a far more challenging environment that is plagued by unprecedented levels of drug trafficking, gang violence, teen pregnancy and truancy.”

The courses will be conducted at the Manchester Center of Family Services of Los Angeles; El Nido Services; YWCA of Los Angeles (Watts Center); Parent Connection; Southwest College Community Services; Girls Club of Southwest Los Angeles; People Who Care Youth Center and All People’s Christian Center.
