THE SIDELINES : Breu Wins, Swiss Dominate Race
ZURICH, Switzerland — Veteran all-rounder Beat Breu won the 1989 Tour of Switzerland and Urs Freuler captured the last leg as Swiss riders dominated the windup of the 10-day, 1,136-mile road cycling race.
It was Breu’s second victory in the classic in eight years. At 32, he still is regarded as one of the country’s leading mountain specialists. He has also competed in international cross-country and motor-paced events. Breu finished with a 30-second margin over Daniel Steiger and 49 seconds over Juerg Mueller, making it a Swiss sweep.
In the final, 100-mile leg from Bruegg to Zurich, Freuler edged countryman Joerg Bruggmann, second, and Canada’s Steve Bauer, third.
