It Costs Nothing to Stay in Denmark These Days

For the next two weeks, travelers under the age of 26 can stay free at 55 locations throughout Denmark.

The program, known as Youth Travel ‘89, begins today and continues until July 9.

Accommodations for young travelers are set up in high schools, youth clubs and sport centers.

Registration is between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. After 11 p.m. you are expected to keep down the noise.

In the morning, visitors are expected to help with a chore and be prepared to leave by 10 a.m. Most of the facilities also offer inexpensive breakfasts.

Addresses for the 55 facilities are available at Danish Tourist Board offices or at DSB (Danish Rail) stations.

In Copenhagen there is a tourist information office at 22 H.C. Andersen Blvd. This gateway city also has a special youth information center called Use It, at 13 Radhustraede, where you can get information on sights, accommodations and store luggage.

London-bound young travelers may want to note the address of the new Sticky Fingers restaurant--9 Phillimore Gardens in the Kensington area of the city. It won’t be in the guidebooks because it was just due to open last month.

Rolling Stones bass guitarist Bill Wyman chose to name the restaurant after the Stones’ famous album. In keeping with that name, it’s a finger-food menu, including fish and chips, pizza and burgers.

Expect the decor to feature Wyman’s collection of Stones memorabilia, along with various artifacts of other leading musicians. The average cost of a meal will be 8 (about $13 U.S.).

If you are having problems finding low-cost accommodations in London there is a new bed-and-breakfast agency with a network of 50 families in the southwest area (40 minutes from the center of the city). It offers single accommodations for 10 or 12 per person in double rooms.

Alma Tourist Services will accept reservations if you include a 25% deposit, or you can call after you arrive in London. The agency is at 10 Fairway, West Wimbledon, London SW20 9DN.

You can travel throughout Quebec and Ontario this summer for less than $10 a day.

The $99 Canadian (about $86 U.S.) Tour Pass is valid for 10 days of unlimited bus travel in both provinces. It is administered by Voyager on behalf of a variety of participating companies, and is available at selected bus terminals in Ontario and Quebec.

You can extend this pass for up to seven more days, for $11 a day. An 18-day, $169 version of the pass also is available, but it is only sold at the youth hostels in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec City.

Toronto’s youth hostel is at 217 Church St. The Ottawa youth hostel is one of the most interesting in Canada; it’s in a renovated prison at 75 Nicholas St.

The Montreal hostel is at 3541 Rue Alymer, and the Quebec City youth hostel is at 19 Rue Ste. Ursule.
