Carl Lewis Beats Stewart, Burrell in 100

Sprinter Carl Lewis and middle-distance runner Said Aouita beat strong fields Sunday to highlight an international track and field meet at Villeneuve D’Ascq, France.

Lewis, who has won six Olympic gold medals, was challenged by new U.S. sprint star Leroy Burrell and Jamaican Raymond Stewart.

Stewart led for the first 60 meters, but Lewis overtook him in the next 20 meters and moved away before winning with a time of 10.05 seconds. Stewart was second in 10.07, and Burrell, making his international debut, was third in 10.11.

Aouita, the Moroccan world record-holder in four events, dominated four Kenyans, including Olympic gold medalist Peter Rono, in the 1,500 meters.

Aouita, who withdrew from the 1,500 at Seoul because of a leg injury, pulled away in the final 150 meters to win in 3 minutes 35.24 seconds. Kip Cheruyiot was second in 3:35.84, Joseph Chesire, third in 3:35.88, and Rono fourth in 3:36.15. Peter Koech, silver medalist in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, was fifth in 3:38.91.

Merlene Ottey of Jamaica edged NCAA champion Dawn Sowell of Louisiana State in the women’s 100, handing Sowell her first loss this season. Ottey won in 10.95. Sowell ran 10.96.

France’s Daniel Sangouma scored a surprising victory in the men’s 200, beating Olympic champion Joe DeLoach with a time of 20.32. DeLoach was second in 20.41. Floyd Heard, who ran 20.09 at The Athletics Congress championships, was third in 20.43.

Roger Kingdom, two-time Olympic 110-meter high hurdles champion, won his specialty in 13.21. American Arthur Blake was second in 13.47.

Steve Lewis, the 1988 gold medalist in the 400 meters, won in 45.05. Olympic finalist Mohamed El Malky of Oman was second in 45.51. Andrew Pettigrew of Miami, whose 44.27 is the fastest time in the world this year, was third in 45.59.
