A federal judge today ordered 43,000 coal miners in nine states to end their wildcat strike and go back to work.

U.S. District Judge Dennis Knapp issued the indefinite restraining order against the United Mine Workers at the request of the National Labor Relations Board. Nearly 43,000 miners in 10 states have conducted wildcat strikes in sympathy with 1,900 UMW members on strike against Pittston Coal Group since April 5. On Monday, all 350 striking miners in Missouri went back to work.

Miners have ignored previous restraining orders and remained off the job.
