NOTEBOOK : Beverly Hills Cycling Contest, 2 Sea Races to Highlight July Fare
The phrase “One if by land and two if by sea,” as all schoolchildren used to know, is from Longfellow’s poem about Paul Revere’s ride.
But it could also refer to three races in July on the Westside.
The land race is the third annual Subaru Cycling Classic of Beverly Hills on July 23. The sea competitions are the Marina del Rey to San Diego yacht race on July 1-3 and the Pacific Offshore Power Boat Racing Assn. contest, which starts at Marina del Rey on July 8.
The Beverly Hills bicycle competition is known as a criterium , a course run over city streets. There will be two races for amateur and professional cyclists: a 20-mile women’s contest and a 40-mile race for men.
Cyclists will compete for $25,000 in prize money in one of eight legs of the national Subaru Cycling Series. Competitors are expected to include Betsy Davis, overall winner in the women’s series last year; Inga Thompson, defending champion in the Beverly Hills leg; 1988 men’s series champion Roberto Gaggioli of Italy and Chris Carmichael, who won the men’s race last year.
The course will be over Rodeo Drive, Brighton Way, Beverly Drive and Little Santa Monica Boulevard. The women will start at noon and the men at 1:30 p.m.
The three-day yacht race, sponsored by the Windjammers Yacht Club of the marina and the Southwestern Yacht Club of San Diego, is an institution on the Westside. But the power boaters seem to be relatively new arrivals.
The three-hour speedboat contest, a fund-raiser for Guide Dogs for the Blind of San Rafael, will start at 10 a.m. July 8. The course is south from the marina to Redondo Point, north to Point Dume and back to the marina.
The field includes such top competitors as 76-year-old Bob Nordskog, John Peters, Karl Koster and Tom Hays.
Ed Templeton, a senior volleyball player for Windward School last season, was inadvertently omitted from a list of local boys named to All-CIF Southern Section teams that ran in last Thursday’s Westside edition. Templeton was selected on the 2-A first team.
Randy Bergstedt of Covina, a senior outside hitter on the Pepperdine men’s volleyball team last season, was chosen on the GTE Academic All-America second team in the university division.
The teams, in university and college divisions, are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. An athlete must be either a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a grade-point average of 3.2 on a four-point scale. Bergstedt, a business administration major, had a 3.64 average.
Vincent Mackey, Los Angeles City 4-A singles tennis champion from University High School, was named to the top singles spot on the All-Los Angeles City first team, and City 4-A doubles titlists Jason Clark and Arthur Mack, also of University, were No. 1 in doubles on the first team.
Other first-team selections in doubles were Aldryn Aguirre-Roy Gessford of Palisades at No. 2 and the Palisades team of Jon Faller-Andy Ghaffari at No. 3.
Second-team selections in doubles included Than Vu-Jose Sola of Fairfax. Third-teamers in singles included Marcelo Blanco of Fairfax, J. J. Mulcahy of Palisades, Jeff Schiamberg of University and Michael Simek of Venice. Michael Redmond-Dominic Falco of University made the third team in doubles.
Five Westside prep basketball players will be among some of the nation’s best on all-star teams from 25 states in the annual Slam-n-Jam invitational tournament on July 17-22 at Cal State Long Beach.
The local players, who will be seniors in the fall, are Nicholas Braggs and Kelvin Ollie of Crenshaw High, Dwayne Lewis of Hamilton, Khary Sands of Daniel Murphy and Shawn Fruge of St. Bernard. Call Ticketmaster at (213) 480-3232.
